Introduction

We are sure you have heard about Loch Ness Monster before. Do you believe in its existence? What does it look like? What does it eat? What did the Nessie hunters say?

Explore the Loch Ness area to find the answers and even more! 


The Task

You are supposed to work in small groups of three. Each group will have a special task concerning one aspect of "Nessie mania". All groups will make a poster based on information they have found on the Internet and then everybody will be asked to write a short article where he/she should comment on the topic.

Your class will be divided to:

Odrážka good friends of Nessie.

You are going to use the information from the Internet. Each group is provided with a list of useful links below. Feel free to find and add more if you think it is worth.

Nature preservers

You are nature loving people who don't like thoughtless tourists roaming the Loch Ness area. You want the nature remain unspoiled and as you believe "there IS something in the lake" you think IT deserves some peace and quiet.
Make a poster and include the following: a map of the lake, interesting facts about the area, some notes about
local wildlife and also a short summary expressing your standpoint.

Nessie hunters

You are real "Nessie maniacs". You invest much money in research, technology and you dedicate your life to chasing Nessie. You are familiar with all the evidence of its existence and you HAVE spotted Nessie too, haven't you?
Make a poster and include the following: description of Nessie, some of Nessie sketches, provide some evidence of Nessie existence and add a short summary expressing your standpoint.

You are real businessmen making a fortune selling package tours to Loch Ness. "The more tourists in Loch Ness area, the bigger fortune" - that is your motto. Recently you have decided to build a big hotel at the lake but first you have to persuade the nature preservers who don't share your ideas.
Make a poster and include the following: important tourist information, places worth visiting, outdoor activities, accommodation and a short summary expressing your standpoint.

Good friends of Nessie

Thanks God Nessie has you! You are always ready to defend its right to have a peaceful place to live in. You collect things associated with Loch Ness Monster - pictures, badges, mugs, T-shirts, toys...You can easily imagine what the life of Nessie is like as you found something called Nessie`s Diary near the lake. WOW!
Make a poster and include the following: a short description of Nessie`s daily routine, choose interesting information from its diary, what does Nessie think of people?, does Nessie like the business people make on it? Write a short summary expressing your standpoint.

The Process

First of all think for a while and discuss your topic and roles in your group. What do you already know about Nessie? Does it exist? Is there any evidence?

To accomplish the task you should:

  1. have a look at the web pages, copy and paste relevant information and put it together,
  2. write a short summary expressing the standpoint of your group - BE PERSUASIVE!
  3. find some pictures to make your poster more attractive,
  4. display your poster in the class and read your class mates` posters,
  5. go to the crossword puzzle and print it out, try to solve it,
  6. write a short article about Loch Ness Monster - use the information from the posters, what was interesting for you? what did you learn about Nessie? do you believe it exists?...express your opinion,
  7. be proud of your work and feel that you did your best.
