Miriam PØINOSILOVÁ
ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born on May 3rd, 1949 in Brno. Miriam
Prinosilova graduated from the Technical University of Brno having studied
architecture in the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
Whilst studying architecture, she also explored the artistic
potential of various textile-related crafts-batik, macramé and bobbin
lace. Later she was enchanted by ART PROTIS, a modern pictorial technique
drawing on the traditions of both Gobelin tapestry and painting but having
contemporary aesthetic appeal. This unique technique originated in Brno
more than 30 years ago. It made a new contribution to representational art
and many artists, mostly Czech, are devoted to it. The tapestry is created
by laying thin layers of coloured natural wool on to a backing, piece by
piece, one on the other. Afterwards, the tapestry is stitched to the
backing using a special stitching machine. The picture is thus
“painted“ using the wool. Each piece of ART PROTIS is an original. The technique allows for the creation of pictures ranging in scale from small to monumental. The artist uses her skills as an architect to create tapestries that complement and enhance specific interiors, both private and public. Natural
forms and landscapes are the most important initial source of the artist’s
inspiration. The visual character of the work tends towards the semi-abstract,
incorporating fantasy and the imaginary. The
tapestries utilise a kaleidoscopic range of colours, from brilliant
contrasting tones to pastel shades. The range of colours contributes to
the viewer’s sense of space and depth. The artist has had a number of solo exhibitions and her works have also been included in larger exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad: in Brno, Prague, Zlin, Jihlava, Humpolec, Valtice, Letohrad, Olomouc, Bratislava, and Antwerp. Her works are to be found in private collections in Europe, North America and Australia and a number of her large tapestries are displayed in public spaces. Since she began to use this pictorial technique, the artist has created more than 300 ART PROTIS tapestries and dozens of wool collages.
