The Plastic People of the Universe |
"What time is it?" - "Here is no time." (a prison in Czechia , in the 70´s) |
At the same time with a beginning of a transiency in Czechia have started the story of the PPU. However it was not a temporal coincidence, because each from these levels had its own time: a transiency did not know anything about a magic rhythm of the universe. |
Mejla Hlavsa co-founded the band The Plastic People of the Universe in objectively inconvenient time , after "temporary" occupation of the Soviet army in the September 1968. Musically he was always close to Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Doors, Velvet Underground and Fugs. Own creative access of the band, where was Hlavsa a main author of music, was appreciated at the show Beat Salon already in 1969. |
Mystic and natural themes, celebrated by music, started finally to be terrestrial, without fadeing away a holiday touch: A cycle of musical productions was determining as occurrences of the society was coming up. However, it was soon to be obvious, that terrestrial consequences of a transiency could not be in harmony together with the universe. |
In May 1970 according to a proceeding "normalization", lost PPU their professional statute and after that they performed as a amateurish ensemble. In May 1973 they tried to get back their professional statute, but a primary positive standpoint of a jury was canceled, because of political arguments. Then performed PPU as an amateurish band at several rock shows, after that they was slowly descending to a "underground" and they performed at latent conserts above all arranged for some occassions like weddings for example. In July 1973 was Jirous (managor of the band) imprisoned for the first time. In 1974 came into being a record "Egon Bondy´s…". |
The attempt as evacuate the band to the "timeless" sphere had paradoxically adjacent effect: to defend them it joined together social elements, segments, layers and individuals, which had been to that time unthinkable. |
In March 1976 were members of the PPU - owing to a pogrom StB forceing an underground -imprisoned. Most of them were dismissed until the August 1976. In November 1976 were sentenced sax player of PPU Brabenec, managor of PPU Jirous, founder of DG 307 band Zajíček and singing parson Karásek. |
In January 1977 came out The Charta 77, when fall into one common area underground workmen together with really various intelektuals. |
In July 1977 was former member of PPU Canadian Paul Wilson ejected by police out of the Czechoslovakia. |
After momental political analysis reared the band for several timeless theological-philosophical-surrealistic masterlike pieces. |
In October 1977 reacted PPU by their only one political lyrics to the present (the "100 points" in concert at Václav Havels provincial domicile). After that concert was imprisoned managor Jirous for the third time. |
In April 1978 played PPU "Easter passions" - individual theological reflection at Hrádeček again by Václav Havel. It had been already preparing for a performance the year earlier in Horní Počernice with originally less members (but it did not take place, ensemble spreaded wide to 10 musicians). |
In October 1979 performed PPU reminiscence of the philosofer Ladislav Klíma´s work "How it will be after death?" in Nová Víska by Chomutov. |
In the last concert in March 1981 gave PPU already pieces from their own sources: Hlavsa set to the music poem from Zajíček and Brabenec´s poems. |
The band paused after another era of resistance - paradoxically in the era of culminating crises of transiency. Then they again started to play in a new times to suffer an absolute loss. |
Since that time the PPU only recorded: fragment of prepared project " Islands Gulag" (1982 - then emigrated sax player Brabenec), "Ox slaughter" (1984), "Midnight mouse" (1985), music for Havel´s play "Temptation" (1986 - the original record has lost, without using it anytime) |
In 1988 the PPU separated. |
In 1997 they met again. They gave a concert for 20th anniversary of inception Charta 77 in " the biggest barn" which was at that time at their disposal: in Spanish hall at Prague castle. |
5th of January 2001 Mejla Hlavsa died. |
And because of relativity of this loss, and its transfering to the real time, comes into being the Plastic Symphony. |
"Actually this little walk made me feel better, you know?" (answer of some mourner for the question "How do you feel?" given by some women after he had burried his wife). |

No More, Nine Inch Nails a Ministry. |
Poté, co ji shlédl a schválil Klaus Tennstedt, nazval Colemana naším "novým Mahlerem". Roku 1992 získal Coleman občanství Nového Zélandu a stal se sídlícím skladatelem Aucklandské filharmonie. |
Jeho nahrávací kariéra se symfonickými orchestry vzrůstala šokující rychlostí dokončením nahrávek s Novozélandským a Londýnským symfonickým orchestrem, pěti nahrávek s Londýnskou filharminií, Novozélandský smyčcovým kvartetem, Symfonickým orchestrem hl. m. Prahy a Českou filharmonií. Prahy. |
Nahrávky roku 2001 obsahují nový houslový koncert pro Nigela Kennedyho, smyčcový kvartet, větší symfonický kus oslavující "Sametovou revoluci v Československu" se Symfonickým orchestrem hl. m. Prahy a koncert pro skupinu Čechomor a Českou filharmonii. |
